The Indian Parliamentary Delegation, led by Shri Harivansh, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, continued its participation in the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, on the fifth and final day of the Assembly, 9 October 2026.

Shri Harivansh and Members of the Delegation attended the meeting of the Governing Council of the IPU, which took up the remaining agenda items, including the election of the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and reports of specialised meetings.

Shri Harivansh, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha; Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, MP, Lok Sabha; and Smt. Kamaljeet Sehrawat, MP, Lok Sabha, cast the three votes allocated to India in the election of the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Following the election by secret ballot, the incumbent IPU President declared Mr. Milton Dick, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia, elected as the next President of the IPU. Immediately after the announcement of the result, Shri Harivansh and other Members of the Indian Parliamentary Delegation congratulated Mr. Dick in person and wished him a successful tenure as President of the IPU.

Subsequently, Dr. Sasmit Patra, MP, Rajya Sabha, presented to Mr. Milton Dick a congratulatory letter from the Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha.

After the conclusion of the Governing Council meeting, the Assembly held its sittings to adopt the Arusha Communiqué; the resolution submitted by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights on “Inclusive social development for all: Parliamentary strategies to promote the rights and empowerment of persons with disabilities”; and the resolution on the emergency item, “Urgent parliamentary action to address climate-related disasters and strengthen resilience in the Himalayan region and other vulnerable regions”.

Thereafter, H.E. Mussa Azzan Zungu, Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania and President of the Assembly, declared the Assembly closed.

The Indian Parliamentary Delegation, led by Shri Harivansh, Hon’ble Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, participated in the 153rd IPU Assembly held in Arusha, Tanzania, from 5 to 9 October 2026. The Delegation’s participation was eventful and effective, and it contributed to the resolutions and outcomes of the IPU Assembly.
