Department of Biotechnology launches Special Campaign 6 with focus on E-waste Management and impactful initiatives reaffirming its commitment to promote cleanliness, hygiene and a culture of responsible workplace practices

Department of Biotechnology, under the aegis of Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DAR&PG) has accelerated efforts for achieving 100% targets in reducing pendency, Record management and coverage of all Campaign sites.  The Department, in collaboration with Scientific Cadre Units, Divisions and its Autonomous Institutions & PSUs, is enthusiastically participating in the implementation phase of Special Campaign 6 as announced by Govt. of India from 2nd – 31st October 2026 for cleanliness and disposal of e-waste material for enhancing work place experience.    Progress of the campaign is being regularly reviewed by Secretary and Joint Secretary & Nodal Officer for the campaign.

During the Preparatory Phase (15–30 September 2026), the Department set key targets, including reviewing and organizing 18,741 e-files, 7,773 physical files, undertaking cleanliness and space-clearing activities at 156 sites to create 46,486 square feet of usable space, disposal of 1,694 e-waste items and generating revenue of ₹ 39,33,055 from disposal of e-waste and non e-waste items.

The Department of Biotechnology observed Swachh Bharat Diwas on 2nd October 2026 by organizing an e-waste disposal drive under Special Campaign 6 reaffirming its commitment to cleanliness and responsible waste management.  The programme was led by Secretary (DBT) at the DBT (HQ), CGO Complex, Delhi, and was attended by senior officers of the Department. On the occasion, Secretary, DBT urged everyone to take personal responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings by properly identifying and disposing of obsolete items, e-waste, and unserviceable materials at home and workplace. He emphasized the growing need for responsible management of electronic assets and systematic disposal of obsolete records / scrap material to create both financial value for the public exchequer and usable space for Government offices.

 

The Department also conducted a Special cleanliness drive “Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath” under chairpersonship of Ms Ekta Vishnoi, Joint Secretary (Admn) on 1 October, 2026 with the participation of all officers/staff in a one-hour mass cleanliness drive/shramdaan from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM in public park near JLN Metro Station followed by Plantation of saplings under ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.

 

As part of activities under Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign- 2026, the Department also organized Kabbad Se Kala – Waste to Art under the theme of Swachhata Se Samridhi in which participants has given discarded materials a second life through creative Waste to Art. These displays carry a simple message: with a little imagination, nothing is truly waste. Let’s institutionalize Swachhata, clear pendency, and make Reduce, Reuse, Recycle a daily habit at every desk.

A cleanliness drive under Jan Bhagidari theme was also undertaken at DBT Secretariat, with active participation of officers and staff. The activities focused on improving cleanliness and upkeep of the premises, promoting proper waste management and sensitising participants towards maintaining clean and hygienic surroundings.

 

The Department also organized SafaiMitra Suraksha Evam Samman Shivirs for preventive health check-ups and medical consultations etc. for sanitation workers and their dependents in convergence with trusted local healthcare service providers and practitioners.

  

The activities undertaken under Swachhata Hi Seva and Special Campaign 6 underscores the Department of Biotechnology’s continued efforts to institutionalise Swachhta in its offices and field establishments and to encourage collective participation in creating clean, well-maintained and sustainable workplaces. The Department continues to accord priority to cleanliness, disposal of obsolete and unusable items, better workplace management and sustained improvement in cleanliness standards as part of the Special Campaign 6.

Further, the campaign is being covered through photography / videography of ‘Before’ and ‘After’ pictures of sites being regularly uploaded on SCDPM Portal.  Several tweets have been published across various social media handles highlighting the achievements of Department and its organisations under Special Campaign 6.
