Continuing its sustained crackdown on organised gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized around 8.3 kg foreign-origin gold valued at approximately Rs. 12.37 crore in intelligence-led operation in an operation along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Four persons have been arrested in connection with the smuggling activities.
In a significant intelligence led operation DRI officers mounted surveillance along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Cooch Behar District and on 05.10.2026 intercepted four individuals travelling on two motorcycles along the route from the Indo-Bangladesh border at Chowdhurihat to Cooch Behar. A personal search of the suspects led to the recovery of gold biscuits, which were concealed in specially tailored cloth waist belts worn by two of them.

A total of 72 gold biscuits, each weighing 116 grams, were recovered from the possession of the said four persons. The total foreign origin gold weighing around 8.3 kg valued at approximately 12.37 crore was seized under relevant provisions of Customs Act, 1962 and all the four persons involved were arrested. Further investigations are underway.
The operation was a culmination of long discreet surveillance done by DRI officials along the Indo-Bangladesh Border in Cooch Behar district. DRI remains steadfast on dismantling organised gold-smuggling networks operating through cross-border corridors. And identifying the wider syndicates behind the movement and distribution of smuggled gold.
