Justice Vikram Nath Delivers Lecture on ‘Judging with Compassion: Human Understanding in the Practice of Law’

The Dr. Ambedkar International Centre (DAIC), in collaboration with the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA), organised the 2nd Prof (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon Memorial Lecture at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in National Capital here, this evening.
The Memorial Lecture, themed ‘Judging with Compassion: Human Understanding in the Practice of Law’, brought together eminent members of the judiciary, legal academia and the legal profession to reflect on the human dimensions of the judicial process and the significance of compassion, empathy and sensitivity in the administration of justice.
The programme was inaugurated by Chief Justice of India, Hon’ble Justice Surya Kant.
Delivering the Memorial Lecture, Hon’ble Justice Vikram Nath, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, highlighted the importance of a humane and compassionate approach to the administration of justice, while emphasizing that compassion must remain firmly anchored in the principles of law, fairness and constitutional values.
The programme also featured a special reflection on the life, vision and enduring contribution of Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon by Dr. R. Venkataramani, Learned Attorney General for India.
Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, Senior Professor, Indian Law Institute, President, CLEA and Member, 21st Law Commission of India, also addressed the gathering.
On the occasion, the Chief Justice of India released two significant publications in the field of law — ‘Indian Personal Law: Unity and Diversity’ and ‘Economics and Law in Context’.
The books have been authored by Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, with the latter co-authored by Sougata Talukdar. Both publications carry forewords by eminent Judges of the Supreme Court of India.
The books were introduced by Mr. Gowrishankar Natesan, Publisher, Thomson Reuters and Chief Executive Officer, Southshore Innovations Private Limited; Ms. Nabila Zehra, Assistant Professor, School of Law, SGT University, Gurugram; and Dr. Sougata Talukdar, Assistant Professor in Law, Government Centre of Legal Education, University of Burdwan.
The Memorial Lecture commemorates the enduring legacy of Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon, a pioneering legal educator, institution-builder and scholar whose contributions played a transformative role in the development of legal education in India.
The Lecture seeks to carry forward his intellectual legacy by fostering dialogue among the judiciary, legal scholars, practitioners and students on evolving dimensions of law, justice and legal education.
The event witnessed the participation of eminent members of the judiciary, legal fraternity, academia and students.
The programme reaffirmed the importance of compassion, empathy and human understanding as essential dimensions of a responsive and humane justice delivery system, while underscoring the need to uphold the rule of law, constitutional principles and fairness in the administration of justice.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Col. Akash Patil, Director, Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, welcomed the distinguished gathering and underlined the importance of creating platforms for meaningful academic and intellectual engagement on contemporary issues concerning law, justice and society.
Dr. Ruchi Sharma D., Joint General Secretary, CLEA, presented the vote of thanks, bringing the formal proceedings to a close.
