On admission to the hospital, the child experienced an aspiration episode while feeding, resulting in sudden respiratory distress, hypoxia and bradycardia. He was immediately intubated and maintained on mechanical ventilation in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for four days. After a thorough clinical and laboratory evaluation, the boy was diagnosed with congenital “Amegakaryocytic Thrombocytopenia”.

It is a rare inherited bone marrow failure disorder with severe thrombocytopenia and bleeding risk. The only curative treatment for this condition is allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation The parents Mulla Khaja, Reshme were informed. With their consent, the stem cell transplant was initiated. Since a perfect match was not available, the father of the child was evaluated and selected as the haploidentical stem cell donor. Haploidentical stem cell transplantation using paternal stem cells was successfully performed on 8th January 2026 for this 10-month-old boy. After the stem cell transplantation, the child recovered steadily with appropriate critical care support and 24-hour monitoring by an expert medical team. As the platelet count gradually improved, ventilatory support was discontinued. Dr. Ashok Kumar Pillai informed that the child was discharged from the hospital after it was confirmed that he was medically stable, indicating a successful outcome of the stem cell transplantation.
