KIMS-Sunshine Hospital Organises Awareness Walkathon on World Stroke Day

Every Minute Counts in Stroke: Timely Treatment Can Prevent Serious Complications.

Hyderabad – Neglecting a brain stroke can have serious consequences not only for patients but also for their families, said Dr. A.V. Gurava Reddy, Managing Director of KIMS-Sunshine Hospitals and Chief Robotic Joint Replacement Surgeon.

On the occasion of World Stroke Day, the Department of Neurology at KIMS-Sunshine Hospital organised an awareness walkathon on Thursday under the theme “Every Minute Counts” to raise public awareness about brain stroke and the importance of timely medical intervention. The walkathon began at the hospital’s main entrance, proceeded towards Rasoolpura Chowrasta, and returned to the hospital. Dr. Kushal Hippalgaonkar flagged off the walkathon.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. A.V. Gurava Reddy said that disability caused by a brain stroke can significantly affect the lives of patients and their family members. He emphasised the importance of family members being aware of the medications taken by their parents and regularly monitoring their health.

Senior Neuro Physician Dr. C.H. Gopal stressed that patients showing symptoms of a stroke should be taken to a hospital immediately without delay. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can improve outcomes, he said.

Senior Neurologist Dr. K. Vinod Kumar highlighted that every minute is crucial during a stroke, as delays in treatment can result in the loss of millions of brain nerve cells. He urged the public to recognise stroke as a medical emergency and seek immediate medical attention.

Senior Neuro Physician Dr. Nivedita Sai Chandra advised people with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart conditions to take their prescribed medications regularly under medical supervision. She also recommended daily exercise, walking and stress management to reduce health risks. Symptoms such as slurred speech, difficulty walking or changes in vision should never be ignored, and patients should be taken immediately to a hospital equipped to provide stroke care.

Senior Neuro and Spine Surgeon Dr. Naveen Mehrotra, Neurosurgeon Dr. Mohana Shashank, and Dr. Tulasiram cautioned that neglecting a brain stroke can lead to life-threatening complications. They reiterated the importance of early recognition and prompt medical intervention.

Doctors, nursing students and hospital staff participated in the awareness walkathon, reaffirming their commitment to educating the public about stroke prevention, early warning signs and the importance of timely treatment.
